Edison Girls Track & Field
Code of Ethics & Team Contract
2018-2019
Who Can? CHARGERS CAN.
Who Will? CHARGERS WILL.
Welcome to the 2018-2019 Edison High School Track & Field Season
This webpage you are reading today will cover almost any and all questions you might have about our program, your training, and our expectations of you. Remember an after-school sport is a privilege, not a right to participate. If you are taking this sport just to get out of P.E. please return to P.E and receive your “Easy A”, because this track team requires hard work and dedication to receive a good grade!
We are committed to winning and helping you become the best person you can be. Academically and athletically we expect you, the student-athlete to conduct yourself in a proper and orderly fashion at all times on, or off Huntington Beach Union High School District grounds. You must remember who it is you are representing when you are out “having fun”. It is easy for us to lose focus with every distraction we have in our life so I thought I would share a story about focusing with you, my coach told us when I was playing sports.
“Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest Lion or it will be killed. Every morning a Lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest Gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle... when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.”
Our Standards
1. Academic Eligibility
Edison High School has always had high standards for its student-athletes and our coaching staff will be no different. At all times EHS Track & Field athletes will be held at higher standards than any other sports athletes on our campus. Our goal for our program is to coach you in Track & Field and help you reach your goals in your events, and in life. With that being said The Huntington Beach Unified School District and CIF have adopted a “C” average (2.0) rule for eligibility. We require that all athletes maintain a high level of academic achievement and certainly expect that they will achieve well above the minimum “C” average required for competition in athletics. Students on academic probation will not be able to compete in school athletics should they receive less than a 2.0 for a second consecutive semester. Students who are academically ineligible will not be permitted to participate in Track and Field, as a class, or an athletic activity. Simply put failure to complete this will be a failure to compete in the league and non-league meets. The form below is what you will use for our grade check, and you will be expected to have it completed when asked.
2. Daily Attendance
You must be at practice every day (Rain or Shine) when your coach assigns practice. I realize that “life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” but please plan wisely. If you are unable to make it to practice please bring a note to the attendance office. Failure to bring a note the following day after the warning will lead to discipline, to help remind you.
3. Attendance Policy On The Day Of A Track Event
Edison High School recognizes the importance of the educational process and the need for students to pursue education as their first priority. Regular and punctual attendance is closely correlated to higher academic achievement in school. We also recognize the value of participation in athletics. Co-Curricular activities make a positive contribution to students’ lives, helping to instill important values and positive self-esteem. However, we consider these co-curricular activities to be of secondary importance to the need for a sound academic education. Therefore, we shall institute the following attendance and co-curricular participation policy for the 2018-2019 season.
• Students must attend regular classes on the day of any school-related event in
order to be able to participate in, or attend, any school-related activity after
school. If any student fails to attend at least a minimum day of class hours,
she will not be allowed to attend any school-related events that day.
• Exceptions to this policy will be allowed for absences due to the conditions
beyond the student’s control. Legitimate, verified family emergencies, court
dates, and funerals are examples.
Medical/Dental appointment. This will require a note from the Doctor/Dentist verifying the time and date the student was at the office. Illness is not an acceptable reason to be excused from this policy. If a student is too ill to attend school, she is certainly too ill to participate in curricular activities.
Violation of this rule will result in the following disciplinary action:
1st Offense: The student is suspended from participating in a competition for that
week. The coach will counsel the student-athlete. The coach may implement other sanctions.
2nd Offense: The student is suspended from participating in the competition that
week. Parent is notified. A meeting with the coach and/or administrator may be arranged. The coach may implement other sanctions.
3rd Offense: The student will be removed from the co-curricular activity.
4. Practice, Training, Team Meetings, and Discipline.
In order to maintain an atmosphere conducive to successful training and team success, the following practice session discipline plan will be enforced. “Horseplay,” failure to follow coaching instructions, walking during warm-ups, non-stretching, or any other behavior during practice time deemed inappropriate by the coaching staff. I am a strict believer on having disciplined athletes. This is not the same as punishment. I believe that having discipline leads to learning and being able to have focus. These are traits that all athletes will need when they are training, due to the danger of this sport it constantly requires focus and discipline. You will be expected to learn, and you must pay attention, to pay attention you must be present. Some forms of discipline may include push-ups, “Big 4”, and when necessary a “Big 8”. Continued failure to follow rules and instructions will lead to those forms of discipline.
5. Events & Meet Behavior
Athletes are expected to adhere to good behavior during all meets. Infractions of these rules will result in an immediate suspension or dismissal from the program. All Athletes are expected to treat school and other athlete’s property with respect.
Selection of events we will do after testing to see what events would be in your best interest. Your input will matter, but ultimately our decision will be final. Remember, we will always put you in the best position for you to be successful, even when sometimes you might not see the “big picture”. Student-athletes will help decide with the coach what three events to run in, and in finals might drop their worst event.
6. Relay Events (Earned not given)
There will be a runoff for the 4x100 and the 4x400m (all levels). Top four sprinters with two alternates will be picked. You are allowed two challenges per season and only allowed to challenge on a Monday, Tues, or Sat. (Day not following a meet, or day before a meet) When a challenge is declared, a coach must be present during the runoff. The runoff will be the best of two races if the best of two series is tied 1-1 the sprinter currently on the relay team will hold on to their position. A coach may choose a runoff as well, your complacency does not mean a permanent “spot” on a relay team. There will be a 2-4 minute recovery in between races.
7. Care and Use of Equipment and Uniforms
Athletes will be held accountable for any equipment broken. All equipment must be returned and put away after practice, at no time is school track & Field equipment allowed to be "borrowed" without the head coaches approval.
8. Dress Code /Practice
Athletes will dress properly for workouts and meets. No athlete will modify/alter issued uniforms, or wear any uniform not issued by the school or booster club without the head coach’s permission. Black shorts or black running shorts similar in appearance may be worn at practice, and shorts must be worn appropriately. (Appropriateness of all apparel is at the discretion of coaches). Only gear with EHS colors or running related phrases on them may be worn at practice. You are not allowed to wear another High School’s clothing with phrases, slogans, or pictures. They are not acceptable, should you come out with another schools’ clothing you will be told to turn it inside out. A pair of running shoes (and Running shoes only) and a pair of running spikes (or event specific shoes) must be brought to practice every day.
10. Injuries
If the injury occurs during practice, athletes will first report it to the coach. Athletes will report to the trainer at the coach’s direction for treatment immediately upon being injured. Athletes will first report to the Trainer before the beginning of practice. Athletes who report to the trainer come to practice late and do not notify their specific coach or the head coach will be marked absent.
*Athletes will be expected to workout unless injured or directed not to by an athletic trainer/doctor.
*Injured athletes will not be permitted to practice until a doctor permits their return in writing, and are cleared by the athletic trainer/school nurse.
* Athletes who do not train will not participate in track meets.
The decision to keep an injured athlete (more than 4 1/2 weeks) on the team is at the sole discretion of the Athletic Director, and Assistant Principal not the Head Coach.
11. Travel
Meets: Athletes are expected to travel to and from dual meets with the team on the bus. All athletes are expected to remain in attendance and participate in the support of teammates until the end of the track meet. Athletes will only be allowed to leave with parents at the end of the meet unless the coaching staff was informed prior to the meet. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
Invitationals: Athletes who commit to participate in an invitational must provide their own transportation to and from the invitational site, arriving at the time designated by the coaching staff. Once the athletes’ events are finished, they may leave. Failure to show to the invitational after making a commitment, the boosters may charge the athlete the price of each event they were in.
12. Student Honor Code/Drug Use/Illegal Substances
Alcohol, drugs, and tobacco are not conducive to athletic achievement. They are also illegal for our team members. EHS Track & Field will follow the guidelines and rules given to you and signed by you and your parents when you enrolled this year and agreed to follow the school rules. Failure to comply and with the Student Honor Code and Drug Abuse will be enforced and fully supported by our coaching staff. Any student(s) caught with or under the influence will be disciplined by the EHS administration and voted on by the team captains and coaches whether or not the student(s) will be allowed to return to the team. At no point will the Team Captains decide a punishment for the said student(s). Simply saying “I didn’t know” or “My bad” will not fly with us or the EHS Administration.
Definition of a drug: a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body
I choose to use the above definition because this more accurately applies to athletes. By this definition, it makes you really think about what alters or affects your body. Sometimes simple things that are consumed daily go unnoticed example: Caffeine (Coffee, Energy Drinks, and Tea etc.) Sometimes students will find a trendy supplement that is being used by other athletes and will take it. This is between you, your doctor, and parents. If you choose to take a supplement, be smart and safe; do your research, first and talk to your parents and doctor. At no time will ANY COACHES or PARENTS be allowed to give/offer their medication/supplements to minors. Failure to comply with this team rule or caught will cause at least a one-game suspension and face possible removal of the student-athlete or coach from the team!
13. Sexual Harassment/Bullying/Cyber Bullying
*No athlete, male or female, should ever feel uncomfortable while participating in the track program. Any reports of sexual harassment or bullying will be reported to the administration immediately for appropriate discipline. Athletes found guilty of sexual harassment, bullying, cyberbullying will be removed from the team.

Evaluation week is usually done 3 times, one during the 2nd week of October, one during the 3 weeks of January one the in March. During this time, all student-athletes will try out and be evaluated to see what events they would most likely be successful in. We will try to determine an event that will help our Track Program and you the student-athlete. We place the team before any single individual, although Track & Field has many individual events, the coaching staff wants you to have a sense of a higher purpose and belong to a greater cause bigger than yourself.
Following the evaluation week, in late January we will have tryouts. “Hell Week” will begin in February. Failure to attend every day during “Hell Week” may result in no participation for the first track meet, or ejection from the team.
“Difficult we do in a few days, impossible takes a little longer”
Finding your Character
It takes all kinds
Ms. Overachiever: A person with limited athletic ability who through hard work and hustle gets every ounce, out of what she has. This type of person often plays “over her head” in games where hustle and tenacity make the difference.
Ms. Natural: A person blessed with instinct, speed, quickness, and strength. Ms. Natural will often tend to have poor training habits because of her ability to perform well without training.
Ms. Golden Girl: A person with the talents of Ms. Natural and the tenacity of Ms. Overachiever. They are rare commodities and highly valued.
Ms. knows it all: A person who thinks she has all the answers. This type of person is very difficult to motivate or coach because she never really believes in someone else’s system. She usually does have all the answers-but, unfortunately, they don’t always match the coaches’ questions.
Ms. Non-urgent: A person who has the tools needed for success but no fire in the furnace. She usually obtains a very even, low profile and never gets too excited by the sting of competition.
Ms. Anti-all: A person who has the ability to become the coach’s headache. A coach can end up defending every move he makes. This player will inevitably find fault with the coach’s philosophy, and pull some of the teammates her way.
Ms. Normal Norm: The majority of people fall into this category. They are the normal Jane’s who can be motivated to achieve desired goals, and they make up the foundation of an organization.
Ms. Hooray for me: A person who is out for Numero Uno. She is easy to motivate as long as the eventual outcome benefits her. BUT, SELFISHNESS IS NOT A DESIRABLE QUALITY IN A TEAM EFFORT!
Ms. Pressure: A person most likely to be an average player, but a player for all the wrong reasons. She is participating because of family or peer pressure, and is, therefore, attempting to achieve someone else’s goals rather than her own!
Ms. I think I’m a Ten: A person with an exaggerated, unrealistic view of his talent. It’s almost as if she looks in the mirror and sees something that is not there. Ms. I think I’m a ten is probably a 5, but good luck convincing her of that.
Goals
Think about setting realistic goals that you can achieve. What can you do differently from last year?

VOTING FOR TEAM CAPTAINS
The Team Captains will be selected by the athletes on the team, with the coaches having the final decision. There will be one athlete who will be selected by the coaches.
1 Shot-Put/Disk
1 Sprinter
1 Hurdler
2 Jumper/Pole Vault
1 Distance
1 Coaches Choice
Team Captains will give input on what we will do as a team; they are expected to lead the teams in proper warm-ups. If there is an issue within the team, the team captains will be expected to bring that issue up to the coaches. I do not tolerate teammates spreading rumors, talking “smack”, and more importantly bringing down/belittling any individual. Everyone is expected to treat each other with respect and failure to do so will not be tolerated.
